Quick Useful Thailand Tips – Travel Tips & Essentials
License
To ride legally in Thailand, you must hold a full motorcycle license and an International Driving Permit (IDP) with motorcycle endorsement.
Insurance
Check that your travel insurance covers motorcycle riding. Most rental bikes include only basic third-party insurance, and some companies offer optional upgrades.
Note: Many end up relying on crowdfunding for hospital bills due to inadequate coverage.
Gear
Mesh or ventilated gear is recommended. While gear is available in Thailand, imported brands are often expensive. Some rental shops may also offer gear for rent.
Money
Cash is still king in Thailand, especially in rural areas. ATMs are widely available. Cards are accepted in most hotels and bigger shops. Mobile payments are common but may not work for foreigners.

Internet
Thailand has reliable 4G/5G coverage in most areas, including many rural routes. Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels, cafés, and restaurants, though speeds can vary.
Sim Cards
Prepaid SIMs with data are cheap and easy to find at airports, 7-Eleven, or mobile shops. Top providers: AIS, DTAC, True Move, (with AIS having the more reliable connection). Plans start from 150–300 Baht. Bring your passport for registration.
Food / Drink
Street food is cheap, tasty, and widely available, with local meals starting around 40–60 Baht. Western food and coffee shops cost more. Tap water isn’t safe to drink, so stick to bottled or filtered water.
Special Requirements
Vegetarian and vegan options can be limited in rural zones. Use the Thai phrase “jay” (เจ) to request vegan food. Always inform vendors about allergies, as cross-contamination is common and ingredient details may be limited.
Bars / Clubs
Chiang Mai nightlife centers around live music venues. Nightclubs exist but are generally low-key. Popular ones include:
- Boy Blues Bar
- Zoe in Yellow Zone
- North Gate Jazz
Safety
Thailand is generally very safe. As with anywhere, stay mindful in tourist hotspots.
Emergency Contacts
- Tourist Police – 1155
- General Emergency – 191
