The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in Thailand
Thailand | Mid-Late May | Motorcycle Charity Event
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is one of the most unique motorcycle events you can take part in. It is not about speed or distance. It is about style, community, and being part of something bigger. A global ride that brings together riders across the world in support of men’s health.

Why Participate
DGR offers something very different from a typical ride. Instead of a regular ride, your participation helps supporting men’s health awareness through the Movember Foundation. You are connecting to a global movement whilst experiencing a unique, style-driven motorcycle event. It is part ride, part social gathering, and part visual spectacle.
What to Expect
Expect a relaxed, social atmosphere rather than a long ride day. Most events include: a central meet point, time to socialise and admire bikes, a short organised city ride, and a post-ride gathering or event. The focus is on the experience, raising awareness and fundraising.
Locations / Info
Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket usually host some kind of organised DGR event. Other locations may be hosting, also. Check the DGR website, to confirm which locations are currently hosting an organised ride.

What date is the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride held?
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride now takes place on the mid – late May (on a Sunday). This used to be September in earlier years, but the date has since changed globally.
Do I need to register in advance?
Yes – registration is required. You must sign up through the official DGR website, select your city, and follow the instructions provided in your rider dashboard. Important: Ride details (meeting point, route, timings) are only shared after registration.
Is the event free to join?
Registration is free, but fundraising is encouraged.
Some cities may: Set a minimum donation target, offer incentives for fundraising, Include optional paid extras (merch, events, etc.)
Can I join without a classic motorcycle?
Not usually / officially. DGR is focused on classic and vintage-styled bikes, and most modern sport or adventure bikes are not accepted. In smaller or informal rides, there may be flexibility – but you should not rely on this. Check first.
What should I wear for DGR in Thailand?
The dress code is dapper and vintage-inspired, but adapted for the climate. Recommended: Lightweight shirts or suits, breathable fabrics, smart boots or shoes.
Where should I stayIs the ride dangerous?
DGR is designed to be a low-speed, controlled city ride, not a high-risk event. However: You are still riding in traffic, group riding requires awareness, conditions vary by location. Ride within your limits and prioritise safety over appearance.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing and good walking shoes. Mornings can be cool, so bring a light jacket, and evenings can get busy, so dress for outdoor conditions. The Balloons are displayed on grassy areas, so there is a chance that it could get muddy if there has been rain.
How long is the ride?
The ride itself is usually short to moderate distance.
The day typically includes: Meeting other riders, photo opportunities, a short organised ride, a social or post-ride gathering. It is more about the experience than the distance.
Does Chiang Mai still host DGR rides?
Chiang Mai has a strong history with DGR, but: Large organised events are no longer consistent, sSmaller or informal rides may still happen, events are not guaranteed every year. Always check the official listing before making plans.
Can I join if I don’t want to ride?
Yes. You can still take part by: Donating, supporting a rider, attending as a spectator (where allowed). The event is about the cause as much as the ride.
Is DGR only for men?
No, anyone can join. While the event focuses on men’s health awareness, participation is open to all riders regardless of gender.

What is DGR?

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR) is a worldwide charity motorcycle event that raises funds and awareness for men’s health through the Movember Foundation.
The concept is simple:
- Ride a classic or classically styled motorcycle
- Dress in dapper, vintage-inspired clothing
- Join a low-speed, organised city ride
It is open to all riders, but the identity of the event, style, presentation, and purpose, is central to the experience.
Can You Join DGR in Thailand?
In recent years, the main locations have included:
- Bangkok
- Chiang Mai
- Phuket*
*Other cities like Phuket, Hua Hin, and Phitsanulok, have hosted smaller or less consistent rides, depending on local organisers.

To join, you must:
- Register on the official DGR website
- Select your city
- Join a low-speed, organised city ride
Route information and meeting points are intentionally kept private until registration.

What Kind of Bike Can You Ride?
DGR is built around classic and vintage-inspired motorcycles.

Accepted styles generally include:
- Classics & modern classics
- Scramblers & trackers
- Bobbers & brat-style builds
- Classic cruisers
- Scooters & sidecars
🚫 Most sport bikes, full adventure bikes, and modern naked bikes are not typically accepted. In some smaller or less formal locations, there can be flexibility, but this should not be relied on. Always check the official DGR guidelines or your local organiser.
This is one of the few motorcycle events where the look of the bike matters as much as the ride itself.

What Do You Wear?

The aim is a dapper, vintage-inspired look.
Think:
- Suits
- weed
- Shirts, ties, waistcoats
- Dresses and classic styles
- Smart boots and accessories
But here is the reality in Thailand: It is hot. Very hot.
So the balance is:
- Lightweight fabrics
- Breathable clothing
- Still keeping the “dapper” feel
You do not need to suffer to look the part.

Safety at The Event

Even though DGR is a low-speed ride, safety still matters.
- Wear protection under your outfit if possible
- Ride within your limits
- Expect group riding conditions
- Stay alert in city traffic

What the Day Actually Feels Like
This is where people sometimes misunderstand DGR. It is not a long ride day.

It is more like:
- Meet up
- Walk around and admire bikes
- Take photos
- Socialise
- Short organised ride
- Post-ride gathering or event
It is part ride, part social event, part visual spectacle.

Typical DGR Ride Schedule
While exact timings vary by city, most Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride events follow a similar structure:
Mornings: Arrival & Registration
Riders arrive at the meeting point, check in, and start gathering. This is when the atmosphere builds. Bikes line up, people socialise, and photos begin.
Midday: Social & Photo Time
Before the ride begins, there is usually time to walk around, admire the bikes, and take photos. This is a big part of the event.
Early Afternoon: Ride Briefing
Organisers provide a short briefing covering route rules, safety, and expectations for the group ride.
Early–Mid Afternoon: Group Ride
The ride itself is typically short and low-speed, often through city streets. It is more of a moving display than a traditional ride.
Mid–Late Afternoon: Arrival & Social
After the ride, participants gather at a final location. This may include a café, restaurant, or event space.
Evening (Optional): Afterparty or Fundraising Event
Some cities may host an evening event with food, drinks, live music, or charity auctions.

Bangkok: What to Expect
Bangkok is currently the strongest and most active DGR location in Thailand.
Typical experience:
- Large turnout (often 100–200+ bikes)
- Strong mix of custom and classic builds
- City parade-style ride
- Landmark routes (kept private until registration)
- Post-ride gathering or event

Chiang Mai: What to Expect
Chiang Mai has real DGR history. Prior events were huge and spectacular. However, sadly, since Covid that changed. So, here is what to expect in current times:
Typical experience:
- Is no longer a large-scale organised ride
- Riders often ride solo or create their own small groups/gatherings. Size varies.
- Is not guaranteed every year

Thailand-Specific Tips
A few things that matter here more than elsewhere:
- Hydrate properly (heat will drain you fast)
- Dress smart but practical
- Keep documents with you
- Ride Respectfully – DGR emphasises behaviour as much as appearance
