Laos Motorcycle Crossing Guide – on a Thai-Plated Motorcycle
Thailand – Laos | Crossing Guide
This guide is for the border crossing inbound from Chiang Khong → Huay Xai, (which remains one of the most commonly used land crossings between Thailand and Laos for motorcycle travellers), and outbound from Vientiane → Nong Khai.
Important — the process may fluctuate and differ depending on officers, timing, and current enforcement practices. Think of crossings as: Usually straightforward, occasionally inconsistent, always worth preparing properly for.

Can I take a rental bike into Laos?
Yes. But ONLY if the rental company allows it and gives you the correct permission documents.
Can I exit Laos at a different border crossing?
Yes — you are not required to exit at the same border you entered. However, you should mention this when making the application. You can also say that you are undecided. If you DO mention a border exit, then you MUST exit at that border (or possibly pay a fee / risk being turned away at a different border point).
Do I need a guide or tour to enter Laos with my bike?
Not officially — many riders cross independently. If police try to extort you on the Laos side for not having a guide, you can either stand your ground or pay the “fee”.
Are bikes under 250cc allowed into Laos?
Previously, no. However, in recent years this rule has changed and smaller cc engines are permitted. Be aware that rules may change again.
Do I need insurance for Laos?
Yes — Lao third-party insurance is required. You can usually buy it at the border before leaving the checkpoint area. It’s inexpensive and necessary for riding legally in Laos.
How long does the border crossing take?
Times can vary. As a general rule, allow at least 1 hour to be safe.
Is the process digital now?
Depends. Laos is introducing digital systems (QR codes and vehicle declarations), but some steps are still manual. Do not rely on it being fully digitized. It is best to be prepared.
Will my Thai SIM work in Laos?
Only close to Thailand border zones unless you have activated international roaming (which can be expensive). Otherwise, no. It is best to purchase a Laos sim card from a local phone vendor on the Laos side. Laos sim card options include Unitel – best for overall coverage, and Lao Telecom – good for cities / towns.
Is internet coverage good in Laos?
Cities and larger towns generally have decent internet. Mountains and remote areas tend to have patchy signals or non at all.
Outbound Process – Chiang Khong to Huay Xai
Crossing from Thai Side
The Thai exit process is relatively straightforward. . Park your bike at the designated area on the far left, then walk to the immigration office with your passport and documents to be stamped out of Thailand and to receive your vehicle export paperwork. Once you have your documents, keep them somewhere easily accessible, as you will need to present them at the checkpoints.
Return to your bike and ride slowly towards the booths ahead. You will need to stop, get off, and hand over your documents to the attendant. Depending on how busy it is, this may involve one or two separate stops before you are cleared to exit.

Crossing from Chiang Khong
This video is from several years ago, but the process is the same – except now much of it is digital, saving time on the process.

Crossing over the Friendship Bridge
Once the paperwork is complete and the booths cleared, continue straight and ride across the Friendship Bridge. Keep a close eye out for the halfway point where you MUST switch to right-hand drive. Look out for signs for vehicles, and park on the RIGHT-HAND side at immigration to apply for your Laos visa and entry documents.
Entering Laos
The Laos entry process can be easy or tricky, depending on luck, really. The first stage requires you to apply for the Laos visa (if you do not already have one). There is often an additional miscellaneous charge placed on top of the 1600 Baht, so expect to pay up to 2000 Baht. Note: USD is accepted and often works out cheaper.
Return to your bike and pass through the gates. Stop and get off your bike at the booths along the way (In 2026, some riders may instead be directed to fill out digital forms or QR-based systems, depending on current rollout). Follow the instructions given at each booth. At this point, you may be required to either go up some stairs to a building (on the right-hand side), or take a short walk to an out-building – in order to purchase compulsory third-party insurance.
Visa on Arrival (if no eVisa)
Import / Customs /Insurance
Documents required
Important: At some point you may be stopped by Laos police who will try to invite you into a building. REFUSE the invitation politely. State that you are in a rush and apologies. Be firm and polite. There have been numerous reports about this extortion scam. You will be told that you have to pay a fee due to not having a guide. This is NOT true. If you enter, you will be left sitting for a long time in the hope you will make the payment.

Exiting from Laos Side
The return process is usually simpler than entry. Documents required are the same. Include your Thai customs export document (important). Head to border immigration, park up and proceed on foot. At times, border control officers will wave you through to different exit points. Be polite and follow instructions.

Entering Thailand

Entering the Thai side process can go smoothly or be a headache, depending on how busy it is. It often involved various stamps and checks. Be patient.
Passport Entry: Park up in the designated parking area (location below), and head to the booth on the left with your passport, to receive your entry stamp into Thailand. Once complete, begin the process of entering your bike.
Bike Entry: The booths for vehicle entry are located on the right hand side. With your paperwork in hand, take them to the nearest booth to begin the process. Your documents will be checked and stamped. Once the process is finished you can begin to drive towards the exit, with one final check before being allowed to exit.

I am borrowing a Thai registered Himalayan from a friend. Do you think I will still be able to cross or does one have to be the registered owner?
Your thoughts appreciated. Thanks..
