Five key motorcycle gear items that I use.

My Gear

1: Helmet – Daddy Modular

Currently, I use a modular ADV helmet from Daddy Helmets. The helmet includes an inbuilt sunvisor. This helmet is DOT Certified and has an ECE rating of R22.05 (the same rating as the Shoei Hornet).

Forma Fail?

Unfortunately, after a short period, the Forma boots began leaking and having various issues. It may be that they are just not suitable for tropical climates. The final nail in the coffin was the lack of ankle protection on a ride, which resulted in torn ligaments after a fall. If sticking to road they can work well due to being less rigid than Enduro Boots. Currently, I bought a budget ADV boot to wear (from Brand Scyoco), which serves their purpose until I can work out what my next boots should be.

3: Jacket – Komine Mesh

Komine is a respected Japanese brand and my Komine JK-053 armoured mesh jacket for women has been my staple motorcycle item for years. The mesh is comfortable for tropical riding and the jacket has lasted incredibly well. I felt that the armour was very flimsy though. So I took out the padding and replaced it with Knox armour.

Knox MICRO-LOCK Back Protector insert

I replaced the armour in the Komine jacket with Knox armour, including this Micro-Lock Back Protector. Soft, thick and moldable with strong protection. A great addition for motorcycle gear.

4: Pants – Pando Moto Kusari

The Pando Moto Kusari Black riding pants have been the most comfortable riding pants I have ever worn. They are waxed jeans with hip and knee armour and a significant portion of Kevlar lining. Surprisingly comfortable in the Thailand heat, also.

Detailed specs:

  • Skinny fit.
  • Made of heavy-duty 8 oz power stretch waxed denim.
  • Lining: made of thick interlock-knit DuPont™ Kevlar® fibers.
  • 2 position knee armour pockets.
  • CE officially approved PPE under EN 17092, level AA (speed 70 km/h).
  • KNOX® Micro Lock CE (EN1621-1:2012) approved knee and hip armour INCLUDED.
  • Hand-made stretch panels on knees.
  • Embroidery in the front.
  • Waterproof zipper on back pocket.
  • Reinforced with chain stitches.
  • Made in Europe.

Rokker Hip Protectors

Knox knee protectors were included with the Pando Moto jeans, but despite having hip pockets, no hip protectors were included. So, I purchased and inserted Rokker Hip Protectors.

5: Gloves – Scoyco

These lightweight gloves fit my small hands perfectly. They are not high-budget motorcycle gear gloves, but I have found most other gloves do not fit my hands well. These small well-fitting gloves feel like a second skin.

  • PROTECTION: Injection shell protection on the palm and back of the hand.
  • ANTI-SLIP: Non-slip PVC particles on the palm for anti-slip.

  • REINFORCED PALM
  • ADJUSTABLE VELCRO CLOSURE.
