Entry Fee: Free

Season: The flowers bloom from early November to early December, with the peak typically in mid-November with a bloom period lasting 2 weeks.

Area: Covering over 1,000 rai (approximately 395 acres), the sunflower fields stretch across the rolling hills, offering panoramic views.

Specialty: Unlike traditional sunflowers, Mexican sunflowers are smaller with bushier plants, giving the fields a unique texture and charm.


Sunrise and sunset are the most scenic times to visit. However, these are the busiest times, so expect congested traffic and crowds. Best to avoid weekends, when the field is at its most crowded.

  • Direct Route: Take Highway 1095 to Mae Hong Son town, then Highway 108 south to Khun Yuam. From Khun Yuam, follow signs to Doi Mae U Kho. (Map)

By Bus to Mae Hong Son + Local Transport:

  • Take a minivan or bus from Pai to Mae Hong Son

  • Cost: Around 2,500–3,500 THB round trip, depending on negotiation.

  2. Fuel Up: Fill your tank in Mae Hong Son town or Khun Yuam, as there are limited fuel options near the Bua Tong sunflower fields.
  3. Plan for Stops: Along the way, enjoy stops at small roadside viewpoints or coffee shops offering fantastic mountain views.
  4. Start Early: Leave Mae Hong Son early in the morning to make the most of your day and avoid afternoon crowds.

Scenic Zones

There are two main scenic viewpoints of the Bua Tong field, each offering stunning panoramic views of the landscape stretching into the distance. The first viewpoint is the most popular and conveniently located by the roadside, requiring minimal walking.

The second main scenic viewpoint is located higher up and requires an uphill walk. The pathway is lined with vibrant sunflowers, making the walk both scenic and enjoyable.

Food options at the Bua Tong Field can be limited, especially for those with special dietary needs. It’s a good idea to bring your own snacks or picnic or check for food stalls along the way to the fields.

Food Options Along the Route to the Fields

  • Local Food Stalls
    • Small vendors sell traditional Thai snacks, grilled meats, sticky rice, and soups, such as Kanom Jeen Nam Ngiao (spicy noodle soup).
    • Gai Yang (grilled chicken) and Som Tam (papaya salad).

Tip: Since food options near the fields are seasonal and basic, bringing water and snacks is always a smart choice.

Tip: Temperatures can drop to 14°С, so best to also pack something warm.

1: Ban Huai Hom / Mae La Noi Royal Project
  • A small Karen village known for its high-quality coffee production.
  • Visit for a unique cultural experience and taste locally grown coffee.
  • Located ~25 km from the fields.

2: Mae Surin Waterfall National Park
  • A beautiful national park featuring Mae Surin Waterfall, one of Thailand’s tallest waterfalls.
  • Perfect for hiking and enjoying the serene natural surroundings.
  • Located ~20 km from the sunflower fields.

The park charges 200 baht for foreigners (100 Baht foreign child rate. 40 baht for Thai citizens), plus 30 baht to enter on a bike. Additionally, you can camp in this park.

3: Khun Yuam World War II Museum
  • Learn about the history of the Japanese army’s presence in the area during World War II.
  • The museum showcases artefacts, photographs, and personal stories.
  • Located in Khun Yuam town, ~30 km from the fields.

The entry fee is just 100 baht which gives you access to some amazing WWII artefacts, as well as an informative video. A very interesting slice of history in a well-cared-for museum.

4: Kiew Lom Bridge

  • Relax in natural mineral hot springs surrounded by lush greenery.
  • A great way to unwind after exploring the fields.
